3MF to STEP converter

Drop a 3MF file and the 3MF to STEP conversion runs in this tab: the mesh inside the package is written as a faceted solid, and Download STEP saves it.

This STEP is faceted. Each triangle of the 3MF mesh turns into a flat face, so you get a solid body for CAD, not a parametric model with real holes or fillets. Expect about 1 KB per triangle. The file re-opens in OpenCascade with the same triangles; desktop CAD has not been checked by hand yet.

Why go from a print file to CAD

3MF is where many printed parts end up: a slicer project or a model shared for printing. Sometimes you need that part in CAD, to design a lid around it, check clearance in an assembly, or mount it on a bracket. A STEP body is what CAD accepts as a solid.

The converter reads the triangles from the 3MF and writes them as planar faces of one closed shell. You can place, measure and section that body in CAD. You cannot edit its radii or hole diameters, because the mesh never had them.

What the 3MF loses on the way to STEP

Slicer project files that already contain G-code, such as Bambu .gcode.3mf, do not open. Export a plain 3MF or STL from the slicer first.

What is inside the 3MF you drop

A .3mf file is a ZIP package published openly by the 3MF Consortium. The shape sits in an XML model at 3D/3dmodel.model, the unit is an attribute of that model (millimeter by default), and color and materials can be stored next to it. The STEP writer uses only the triangles of that model. Keep the 3MF if the painted or multi-material version matters to you.

Keep the STEP small

A 3MF of a figurine or a scan can hold hundreds of thousands of triangles, and at 1 KB each the STEP gets very large. Read the triangle count in Info. If it is high, use Edit → Reduce triangles before converting: our test sphere at 30 % of its triangles stayed within 2 % of its volume.

Convert 3MF to STEP in five steps

  1. Drop the .3mf file or press Open File.
  2. Check X × Y × Z in Info against the size you expect in millimetres.
  3. Read the mesh check; run Edit → Repair if it shows holes.
  4. Press Download STEP.
  5. Re-open the file in the STEP viewer and compare the size.

All five steps happen inside the browser tab; the 3MF is never sent anywhere.

Measure the part before it goes to CAD

A faceted body is hard to dimension in CAD, because there are no true edges to pick on curves. Take the key numbers here first. Measure snaps to vertices and shows the distance with ΔX, ΔY and ΔZ; on our test cube two corners read 20.00 mm. The Section plane slides along X, Y or Z and paints the inside red, which shows wall thickness and hidden cavities.

Write those numbers down, and you can model the mating part in CAD against real values instead of guessing from facets.

If the result is not what CAD expects

If CAD shows loose faces instead of one body, the mesh was open. Go back, read Watertight in Info, run Repair mesh and convert again. If the 3MF holds a whole plate, Info counts the separate parts. Export just the object you need from the slicer and convert that file on its own.

If the STEP is slow to load in CAD, check the triangle count. A reference body for clearance checks rarely needs every triangle of a sculpt, so reduce the mesh and write a lighter file.

Other conversions for a 3MF

For a slicer that wants a plain mesh, 3MF to STL is the shorter route. For rendering or game tools, 3MF to OBJ. To look inside the package first, open the 3MF viewer, and the 3MF file guide explains what the format stores.

Questions and answers

Can I turn a 3MF into an editable CAD model?

Not with this tool. You get a faceted solid with every triangle as a flat face. To change dimensions, remodel the part in CAD using this body as a reference.

Why is the STEP file many times bigger than the 3MF?

Each triangle becomes its own face in the STEP, at about 1 KB apiece. Reducing triangles before the conversion shrinks the result.

How do I check the STEP after converting?

Open it in the STEP viewer on this site and compare X × Y × Z with the 3MF. Then import it in your CAD program, which we have not tested by hand yet.

Does the STEP keep the colors of the 3MF?

No. The STEP writer takes the triangles only, so paint and material assignments stay in the original 3MF. Keep both files side by side.

Can I open a Bambu project file here?

Not the .gcode.3mf kind. Export a regular 3MF or STL from the slicer and drop that instead.

Is the 3MF uploaded during conversion?

No. The package is opened and the STEP is written by JavaScript in this tab. A test run logged every request: all went to our own origin, and none carried file data.
