Can you 3D print an FBX?
Not directly, because slicers take STL or 3MF. FBX to STL turns the meshes of the file into one triangle surface the slicer accepts, and rig, animation and textures are dropped.
The converter reads FBX 7.0 and newer, binary and ASCII. An FBX 6.x file gets a message asking you to re-export it as FBX 2014/2020, OBJ or glTF.
Steps from FBX to a printable STL
- Drop the .fbx here or press Open File.
- Wait for the bar with
name.stland Download STL. - Open Info. Read the height and the mesh check line before anything else.
- Fix the height in Edit → Size and run Edit → Repair if the check finds holes.
- Press Other formats, tick the Z-up option and save the STL.
Stand the model up for the slicer
Animation and game programs mostly work Y-up and slicers work Z-up, so a converted character often lies face down on the bed. Press Other formats and tick Rotate Y-up model to Z-up (for slicers) before saving.
Edit also has lay on bed, which moves the lowest point to Z = 0, and center on origin, which puts the figure in the middle of the bed. If the figure leans after the Z-up turn, Edit rotates it about X, Y or Z by any angle, and Undo goes back up to 20 steps.
Getting the size right in millimeters
The FBX unit scale is not applied, and coordinates are copied as stored. A file flagged as millimeters with a 20-unit cube opens as 20 mm.
A character stored in another unit opens off by a round factor, so measure one known dimension. Edit → Size then sets the height of the figure in mm and scales the other axes with it. A 120 mm tabletop figure is a good test: if Info says 1.2 mm or 1200 mm, you know the factor.
Seams, loose parts and holes
Game models are built from separate pieces (eyes, hair, armor) that overlap and are often open underneath. Open Info: the mesh check counts parts, holes, open edges and non-manifold edges, so you know before slicing.
Edit → Repair closes simple holes and fixes normals. Combine has a union of all parts that merges the pieces into one body once each one is watertight. A figure that fails the night before a game session usually fails here, on an open seam the slicer could not fill.
Tested files and next steps
Two FBX to STL cases ran in the automated suite: an ASCII cube and a second cube file made by another tool. Both STL files re-opened with the same size, volume and triangle count. The FBX stays in your browser while this happens; the test run counted zero requests to other domains.
Clean the result in STL repair, then get weight and price from the 3D print cost calculator. Other targets from the same file are FBX to OBJ and FBX to GLB; the FBX viewer shows the file without converting.
Without a desktop slicer, STL to G-code slices in this tab. Its printer profiles have not been test-printed on a real machine yet, so watch the first layer. Supports are simple vertical columns, and a figure with outstretched arms prints better from a desktop slicer with tree supports.
Questions and answers
How do I convert FBX to STL for printing?
Open the FBX here, tick Rotate Y-up model to Z-up under Other formats, check the size, and press Download STL.
Why does the converted model lie on its back?
The FBX is Y-up and your slicer is Z-up. The Z-up option in Other formats stands it upright.
Why is the STL the wrong size?
The FBX unit scale is not applied. Set the real height in Edit → Size and save the STL again.
Can the pieces of a character become one solid?
Yes, if each piece is watertight. Run Repair first, then use union of all parts in Edit.
How much will the printed figure weigh?
Info gives the volume and the weight for 17 materials, with a % of solid field for infill. The cost calculator adds price per kg and print hours.
Can I save my edited STL back to FBX?
No. There is no FBX writer; STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB and the other targets are available.
Do I need to make the figure hollow to save filament?
No hollowing tool is offered here. Set the infill in your slicer instead, and use the % of solid field in Info to see the weight at that infill before you print.
