Your options for opening a STEP file
| Option | What you get | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Your CAD program | an exact solid you can keep modeling | an install and a license; no feature history from the sender |
| Browser viewer | view, section, measure, mesh check, convert | a triangle mesh for display, no feature editing |
| A slicer that imports STEP | a mesh ready for print settings | precision set by the slicer |
When a supplier part lands in your inbox and the quote is due today, the browser is the shortest path to its size. Design changes still belong in CAD.
School laptops, shop-floor PCs and Chromebooks often block installs. The browser route needs only Chrome, our tested browser, and no admin rights. The engine stays cached after the first file, and the layout works down to 390 px width when you check a part on a phone.
How to open a STEP file in this tab
- Drop the .step or .stp on the viewer, or press Open File.
- Wait for the engine on the first file: OpenCascade is 7.6 MB (3.1 MB gzip) and downloads from our domain once.
- Choose precision. Coarse, Medium and Fine gave 48, 84 and 172 triangles on a rounded test cube.
- Read Info: the unit declared in the file, size in mm, volume, parts.
- Use the section plane along X, Y or Z to look inside; the cut shows in red.
Tessellation runs in the browser, so the supplier's part is not posted to any server. Our full test run made zero requests to other domains.
Check the units before you trust the size
STEP declares its unit, and the viewer converts it: a 1 inch cube declared in inches reads 25.4 mm. Trouble starts when an exporter writes millimeter numbers under an inch label. The CAX-IF AS1 assembly opens 5080 mm long, the viewer shows Check the units, and the switch Numbers are millimetres returns the intended 200 × 87 × 150 mm.
You can also read the unit yourself, since STEP is text. Search the DATA section for LENGTH_UNIT: a line with SI_UNIT and .MILLI. means millimeters. FILE_NAME in the header usually names the exporting program and the date, and FILE_SCHEMA names the protocol, such as AP214 or AP242. That tells you whether the exporter or the receiver made the mistake.
Assemblies, colors and bodies
A STEP assembly opens with its parts in place and their colors kept. The mesh check runs body by body, so one open shell does not hide behind nine good ones; AS1 reported 10 of 10 bodies closed. Info also counts the separate parts, which helps when a supplier says the file holds one part and you see four. Move the section plane through an assembly to see whether screws, bearings or inner parts are modeled or left out. A body with an open shell will not slice cleanly, so look for it before you print.
Files that look like STEP but are not
Native part files from desktop CAD (SLDPRT, IPT, F3D) do not open here; export STEP from the source program first. IGES is a close relative and opens in the IGES file viewer. Very large assemblies are bounded by memory: above roughly 1–2 million triangles the tab may give up, so try Coarse precision first.
Next step after opening
To print the part, save the mesh with STEP to STL in the precision you picked. To keep the viewer at hand, use the STEP viewer page. Our STEP file guide covers B-rep, protocols and the file layout.
Questions and answers
How do I open a .stp file?
The same way as a .step file: the two extensions mark one format. Drop it on the viewer or open it in CAD.
Can I open a STEP file without CAD?
Yes. A browser viewer tessellates the solid and shows it with size, section and measure tools. Editing features still needs CAD.
Why does the first STEP file take longer?
The OpenCascade engine downloads once, 3.1 MB compressed. Later STEP and IGES files open without that wait.
Can I edit a STEP file in the browser?
You can scale, cut or combine the triangle mesh after opening, then save STL or 3MF. Changing a fillet or a hole as a feature needs CAD.
What if the STEP opens at the wrong size?
Read the declared unit in Info. If the numbers are millimeters labeled as inches, switch on Numbers are millimetres.
Can I open an IGES file the same way?
Yes. IGES dates from 1980, STEP is its successor, and the same engine opens both. IGES built from loose surfaces may show mixed face orientation; Edit → Repair fixed that on our 6-surface test cube.
Can I open a STEP file on a phone?
The page layout was tested at 390 px width. Phones have far less memory than desktops, so open large assemblies on a computer.
