What survives the 3MF to STL conversion
3MF is the newer print format, a zip package with the mesh and its metadata. Plenty of software still asks for STL: older slicers, model sites, some CAM and repair tools. Converting gives you the triangles in the format every one of them reads.
| Item | 3MF | STL |
|---|---|---|
| Triangles | yes | yes, same count |
| Units | stated in the file | none; numbers stay as millimetres |
| Color | depends on the exporter | not stored |
| Several objects | one or more | one file; Info counts the parts |
On our tests a 20 mm cube went 3MF → STL and re-opened at the same size, volume and triangle count. A 9,024-triangle sphere passed the same check.
Binary or ASCII STL
Other formats lets you choose between binary STL, the compact form most slicers take, and ASCII STL, the text form that a few older programs still ask for. The ASCII vs binary STL guide explains when to pick which.
Size is the practical difference. Binary STL takes 50 bytes per triangle plus an 84-byte header, so our 9,024-triangle sphere is 451,284 bytes. The ASCII export of that sphere took 2,723,685 bytes, about 302 bytes per facet. Unless a program refuses binary, take binary.
How to convert 3MF to STL
- Press Open File or drag the .3mf onto the tool.
- Look at Info: size in mm, triangle count, number of parts, watertight yes or no.
- Press Download STL. The model stays on screen for a second look.
- For the next file, press Convert another file.
The package is unzipped and read inside your browser tab, so the 3MF stays on your computer.
Size, weight and cost on the same screen
While the converted mesh is on screen, Info reads X × Y × Z in mm or inches, the volume in cm³ and the surface area. It also gives the weight for 17 materials, from PLA at 1.24 g/cm³ to steel and titanium, with a % solid field for infill. That is enough to decide whether a downloaded model fits your printer and your spool before you slice it.
Files that will not convert
Bambu .gcode.3mf files are print jobs with G-code inside, and this tool does not read them. Open the project in its slicer and export the plate as a plain 3MF or STL. Very heavy meshes are limited by memory: about 1 million triangles take 5 to 12 seconds to open, and above roughly 1 to 2 million the tab may run out of memory.
When the converted STL looks wrong
A 3MF stores its unit as an attribute of the model, millimeter by default, while the STL stores none. If your slicer imports the STL at the wrong scale, it guessed the unit; set it to millimetres on import. The numbers in the file match the X × Y × Z that Info showed.
If the part has gaps or dark patches in the slicer, look back at the mesh check. Open edges and inside-out normals travel from the 3MF into the STL unchanged. Repair mesh fixes the simple cases before you download again, and its message lists anything still open.
From STL to print
If the mesh check lists holes or flipped triangles, STL repair fixes the common cases. The 3D print cost calculator turns the volume into grams and a price, and STL to G-code slices it in the tab. For the reverse trip use STL to 3MF; for CAD, 3MF to STEP.
Questions and answers
Can I convert a 3MF file to STL without software?
Yes. This page does it in the browser tab; there is nothing to install and no account.
Will the STL be the same size as the 3MF?
Yes. The numbers are kept as millimetres. STL does not store the unit, so tell whoever receives it that the file is in mm.
Why did the colors disappear?
STL holds only triangles, without color or material. Keep the 3MF if you need the painted version.
My 3MF has several parts. What happens to them?
They all go into one STL. Info shows how many separate parts there are, and your slicer can split them again.
Can I convert a Bambu .gcode.3mf to STL?
No, that file is a sliced print job. Export a plain 3MF or STL from the slicer project instead.
Should I pick binary or ASCII STL?
Binary, unless a program asks for text. In our measured files ASCII STL took 280 to 300 bytes per triangle, roughly 5.6 to 6 times the 50 bytes of binary.
How long does a large 3MF take?
In our measurements a 250,000-triangle model opened in about 1.5 seconds and a 1 million triangle one in 5 to 12 seconds. The STL is written right after.
