Three ways to open an STL
| Way | You need | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser viewer | Chrome or another Chromium browser | looking, measuring, converting, quick repair | memory above 1–2 million triangles |
| Slicer | an installed slicer | preparing the print | it may move the part to the bed center |
| CAD program | CAD and a license | using the shape in a new design | imports as a mesh body without features |
The browser route suits a school laptop, a borrowed computer or a Chromebook where you cannot install anything. Tested browser: Chrome 155. Firefox and Safari have not been tested yet.
How to open STL files in the tab, step by step
- Drag the .stl onto the viewer below, or press Open File and pick it.
- Orbit with the left mouse button, zoom with the wheel, pan with the right button; on touch, use one and two fingers.
- Pick a standard view: isometric, top, front, right and the opposite sides.
- Open Info for X × Y × Z, volume, surface area, triangles and separate parts.
- Press Measure and click two points; they snap to vertices.
JavaScript reads the file on your computer, and our test run logged zero requests to other domains. Two corners of the 20 mm test cube measured exactly 20.00 mm.
Open STL links from a web page
A link of the form ?url= pointing at a file that allows downloading opens it straight in the viewer. On model sites, the Chrome extension puts a badge on the toolbar with the number of 3D file links on the page. Right-click any of them and choose Open in STL Viewer.
Files you opened before appear under recent files. That list is kept in this browser only, so another computer or a private window starts empty.
When the STL will not open or looks wrong
- Slow or crashing tab. 250k triangles (12 MB) open in about 1.5 s and 1M triangles (48 MB) in about 5–12 s; above roughly 1–2 million the tab may run out of memory. Reduce triangles on a stronger machine first.
- A tiny part. It was drawn in inches. Press Inches → mm.
- Dark patches or see-through walls. Normals point inward or the shell has holes. The mesh check names the problem and STL repair fixes simple cases.
- Garbled shape. The download may be cut short. A binary STL must weigh exactly 84 + 50 × N bytes, so compare its size with the source.
- A gray or plain model. STL holds no color in the standard, so a multi-color part always opens in one color. Ask for 3MF if the colors matter.
How to read an STL file in code
Writing a script that loads STL is a common first task in Python or MATLAB. Start by telling the two encodings apart: read the triangle count from bytes 80 to 83 and check that the file size equals 84 + 50 × count. If it does, the file is binary; otherwise parse it as text that begins with the word solid.
Each binary record is twelve 32-bit floats and a 2-byte attribute, little-endian. For ASCII, expect seven lines per facet and roughly 280–300 bytes per triangle when the exporter writes long decimals, so a text parser has more work to do. Most languages have a small library that does this for you. For a quick visual check of what your script wrote, drop the output here and compare the triangle count in Info.
After the model is open
Check the size before you slice. Get dimensions of an STL file explains the Info numbers, and the weight for 17 materials. For printing you can convert to 3MF or slice in the tab; our printer profiles have not been test-printed on a real machine yet, so watch the first layer. The STL format guide explains why units and closed meshes matter.
Questions and answers
How do I open an STL file without software?
Use a browser viewer. Drop the file on this page and it opens in Chrome with nothing to install and no account.
Can I open an STL on a phone?
The layout was tested at 390 px width, and touch orbit and zoom work. Large models may need more memory than a phone tab can give.
Why does my STL open so small?
STL has no units, and the part was likely drawn in inches. Inches → mm multiplies every coordinate by 25.4.
How do I open an STL on a Chromebook?
Open this page in Chrome and drop the file. Chrome is the browser we test on, and nothing gets installed.
Can I open an STL in CAD?
Most CAD programs import STL as a mesh body you can view and measure. Feature edits such as changing a hole diameter need the original model.
Is my STL uploaded when I open it here?
No. JavaScript in the tab reads the file, and our full test run logged every request going to the site's own origin, none to other domains. You can confirm in the browser's Network tab that the model file itself is never sent.
Can I open an STL from a link without downloading it first?
Yes, when the host allows downloading. Add the address as a ?url= link, or right-click the link with the extension and pick Open in STL Viewer.
