FBX to GLB for web and AR
FBX comes out of 3D programs; GLB, the binary container of glTF 2.0, is what web viewers load. An FBX to GLB conversion takes the mesh out of the authoring file and puts it into one compact file a browser can show.
The conversion writes the mesh. Animation and texture transfer are not part of our tests, so check the GLB in a viewer before you publish.
How FBX numbers turn into glTF meters
Two rules meet here. FBX coordinates are taken as stored, without the file's unit scale. GLB keeps raw numbers, and glTF viewers read them as meters.
A cube stored as 20 units therefore shows as 20 m in a glTF viewer, and a model stored in centimeters comes out 100 times too large. Fix it before saving: in Edit → Size, enter 1 % for centimeters or 0.1 % for millimeters, press Apply, then pick GLB under Other formats.
Version support and tests
FBX 7.0 and newer (FBX 2010+) open as binary or ASCII. An FBX 6.x file shows which version it is and asks for a re-export as FBX 2014/2020, OBJ or glTF.
In the test suite an FBX cube and the 760-triangle sphere from an FBX 7.5 ASCII file became GLB, were re-opened and kept size, volume and triangle count. An FBX to glTF + .bin zip was tested as well.
Convert FBX to GLB step by step
- Drop the .fbx here or choose it with Open File.
- Wait for
name.glband Download GLB in the bar. - Open Info and read the size; a 20 mm part that shows 20 mm will appear as 20 m on the web.
- Apply the scale from the section above if the target viewer reads meters.
- Save the GLB. Need text glTF? Other formats offers a .gltf + .bin zip.
Saving with Draco compression is not offered. The FBX is read by the tab itself; the test run made no requests outside this site.
Trim the mesh before it goes online
Assets from game projects can be far denser than a web page needs. After loading, Info lists triangles and parts. Edit → Reduce triangles keeps a chosen share of them, and the converted GLB is saved again from Other formats.
Large scenes follow the same memory rule as any model here: about 5 to 12 s for a million triangles, with a risk of running out of memory above 1 to 2 million.
When the FBX to GLB result looks off
- Empty screen in the web viewer. The model is so large that the camera sits inside it. Apply the 1 % or 0.1 % scale and save again.
- The figure no longer moves. Animation is not part of what we test. Plan on a static model, or export glTF from your 3D program if motion matters.
- Plain gray surface. Textures are read by the engine but not covered by our tests. Check the GLB before it goes live.
- Version message. The file is FBX 6.x; re-export it from the program that made it.
Other FBX and GLB pages
There is no GLB to FBX here, because the tool cannot write FBX. Check the source scene in the FBX viewer and the result in the GLB viewer. For editing in a modeling program, use FBX to OBJ; for a print, FBX to STL. All supported pairs are listed on the STL converter hub.
Questions and answers
Which FBX files convert to GLB?
FBX 7.0 and newer, binary or ASCII. FBX 6.x needs a re-export first.
Why is my GLB 100 times too big?
The FBX was stored in centimeters and glTF viewers read meters. Scale by 1 % in Edit → Size before saving.
Does the animation of the FBX come along?
The conversion is tested on meshes only. Check animated models in a viewer before you rely on them.
Can the GLB be compressed with Draco?
No. Draco files open here, but saving with Draco is not offered.
Are FBX textures packed into the GLB?
The engine reads FBX textures, but texture transfer is not covered by our tests. Look at the GLB in a viewer first.
Can I turn a GLB back into FBX on this site?
No. There is no FBX writer; use your 3D program for FBX output.
Is the FBX sent to a server for conversion?
No. The FBX is read and written as GLB by code in this tab. In the full test run every request went to this site, all were GET, and nothing was posted, which matters for unreleased game assets under an NDA.
