FBX to OBJ converter

Drop an .fbx and the FBX to OBJ converter writes an .obj as soon as the mesh appears. It reads FBX 7.0 and newer in binary and ASCII; older files get a message instead of a broken model.

Also GLB / glTF, PLY, IGES, OFF, 3DS, FBX, DAE, WRL, AMF · several files at once (OBJ + MTL, glTF + BIN)

🔒 Files are opened by your browser and never leave your device

Which FBX files the converter reads

FBX versionResult
7.0 and newer (FBX 2010+), binaryOpens; tested with 7.4 binary
7.x ASCIIOpens; tested with 7.4 and 7.5 ASCII
6.xDoes not open; the viewer names the version and asks for a re-export

For a 6.x file, export it again from the program that made it as FBX 2014/2020, or straight as OBJ or glTF. The message appears before any conversion, so you never download a broken OBJ.

What FBX to OBJ keeps

An FBX file can hold a whole scene with rigs, animation and cameras next to the meshes. OBJ holds static geometry. The converter takes the meshes and writes their triangles, and the scene parts are left out.

Coordinates are taken as stored, and the FBX unit scale is not applied. A file flagged as millimeters with a 20-unit cube opens as 20 mm and stays 20 units in the OBJ. Textures from FBX are read by the engine but not covered by our tests.

The tests behind this page

Two FBX files were converted to OBJ and re-opened: a binary cube and an FBX 7.5 ASCII sphere with 760 triangles. Size, volume and triangle count matched.

This exact page mode was also tested end to end, through the real file picker and the download of the .obj. Other FBX 7.4 binary files made by two different tools opened with the expected triangle count.

How to convert FBX to OBJ

  1. Press Open File; the picker shows FBX files. Dropping the file works too.
  2. If a 6.x message appears, re-export as described above.
  3. Otherwise the bar shows name.obj and Download OBJ.
  4. Open Info to see how many parts and triangles the OBJ will contain.
  5. Save the file, or press Convert another file.

Game and film assets often sit under a license or an NDA. The FBX is parsed inside this tab, and the full test run showed only GET requests to this site and none elsewhere.

Heavy FBX scenes

A full scene may hold many meshes. Info counts the separate parts and the triangles after loading, which tells you what the OBJ will contain.

Memory sets the limit: about a million triangles open in 5 to 12 s and need roughly 1.2 to 1.7 GB, and above 1 to 2 million triangles the tab may run out of memory. For a huge scene, export only the objects you need from your 3D program.

FBX to OBJ troubleshooting

There is no way back to FBX here

The tool has no FBX writer, so OBJ to FBX is not possible on this site; your 3D modeling program does that. From the same FBX you can also make an STL with FBX to STL or a web file with FBX to GLB. Open the source in the FBX viewer and the result in the OBJ viewer.

Questions and answers

Which FBX versions can be converted to OBJ?

FBX 7.0 and newer, binary and ASCII. Tested: 7.4 binary, 7.4 ASCII and 7.5 ASCII.

My FBX will not open. What now?

It is likely FBX 6.x. Re-export it as FBX 2014/2020, OBJ or glTF from the program that made it.

Is the animation kept in the OBJ?

No. OBJ stores static geometry, so bones, animation, cameras and lights are not written.

Can I convert OBJ back to FBX here?

No. Saving to FBX is not possible on this site; use your 3D modeling program for that.

Can I convert several FBX files at once?

No. Batch conversion is not offered; convert the files one by one.

Does the FBX unit setting change the size?

No. Coordinates are copied as stored, and the FBX unit scale is not applied.

Which parts of a scene end up in the OBJ?

Every mesh the viewer loads goes into one OBJ, with the separate parts counted in Info. Cameras, lights and bones have no place in OBJ. Hide or delete what you do not need in your 3D program and export again for a lighter file.
